34 years old Kevin Ferguson alias 'Kimbo Slice' was born in Nassau, in the Bahamas on February 8, 1974. He started his fighting career as a Miami-based street fighter, but he turned to mixed martial arts (MMA) fighting after some time. In the beginning, Kimbo appeared in many underground fights that largely spread on the internet in a very short period of time. However, these days Kimbo is putting his efforts to become a true professional mixed martial arts fighter and street fighting is no more for him than bitter sweet memories of the past. Kimbo was named as "The King of the web brawlers" by Rolling Stone.
In the beginning Kimbo was an unsanctioned street fighter. His fight
with Sean Gannon, who was a former Boston Police officer and
trained in MMA, got enough popularity and it was distributed throughout the internet. This propelled Kimbo Slice as well as Sean into the
MMA spotlight.
Retired MMA fighter Bas Rutten now trains Kimbo for sanctioned MMA fights and he fought his debut MMA fight against Ray Mercer who was former WBO Heavyweight champion boxer. It was announced that the match would be fought in a three-round exhibition with all professional MMA fight rules, but Kimbo defeated Mercer at 1:12 into the very first round with a guillotine choke.
After that fight, Slice said in the interview that he wanted to fight Tank Abbott. Tank Abbott who was also sitting there as a
spectator, stood
up form his seat and accepted kimbo’s challenge. A CFFC matchmaker asked Kimbo to confirm so that a fight between
Kimbo and Tank Abbott could be organized at Cage Fury Fighting Championship 6 on October 12th. However, the event was cancelled
afterward because of a promotion dispute.
On June 23, 2007, Slice started his MMA career against Ray Mercer (former Heavyweight champion boxer) at Cage Fury Fighting Championship 5, in Atlantic City. This match was scheduled as a three three-round match with professional rules of MMA fighting, but Kimbo sliced Mercer using a guillotine choke at just 1:12 into the first round.
